Gay in the Gilded Age with Claybourne Elder

One of the anxiously followed storylines in HBO’s “The Gilded Age” has been the love story between Oscan van Rhijn and John Adams. Born into a prestigious New York family and in fact a descendant of the President for whom he is a namesake, John Adams became a fan favorite character along with Oscar (played by Blake Ritson) as the two navigated their complex relationship out of society’s glaring view. In this episode, following the dramatic events of Season 3, actor Claybourne Elder who has played the role of John Adams for the show’s three seasons, joins The Gilded Gentleman long with Greg Young of the Bowery Boys do discuss the role and character, what filming the series was like and what perhaps the life of a gay character in the Gilded Age might have been like.
